Preparing shipment information before sending goods to Australia

Describe the goods before asking for a shipping option

General descriptions such as “household items” or “gifts” are not enough to plan a shipment. List each product, quantity, intended use, material or ingredients, whether it is new or used, and its value. Product photos and labels help the adviser understand the shipment accurately.

Confirm the recipient and intended use

Prepare the recipient’s or company’s name, full address, postcode and contact number. Explain whether the goods are for a business, an event or personal use. If there are several delivery addresses, separate the lists at the start to avoid confusion during packing and documentation.

Check official information for the actual goods

The Australian Border Force provides guidance on importing into Australia, with links about different goods and declarations. Check requirements against the actual products and shipping method; a general online list cannot determine the conditions for every shipment.

Before handing over the goods, discuss any additional information or documents needed and who is responsible for each step. If acceptance conditions for an item have not been confirmed, check them before completing all the packaging.

Confirm costs and expected timing

Provide the number, dimensions and weight of the packed parcels. Clarify the quotation’s scope, what is included, the sender’s and recipient’s responsibilities, and the expected schedule. Confirm when the goods will be used only after agreeing a plan for the particular shipment.
